HISTORY OF COLLEGE     
Birth and Growth of St. Joseph’s College of Education for Women, Guntur – Chronologically

1946:

The college was inaugurated with 12 students on its rolls. The college was the brainchild of Sr. Stanislaus SwamikannuPillai. At the outset the college was housed in the school building but later on a two storeyed building was constructed for it in the premises of St. Joseph’s High School, Guntur.

1956:

Women candidates coming from various parts of the country to join the training college needed a hostel.  After housing them in two rented buildings in the first few years, in 1956 a permanent and spacious hostel was constructed. In course of time additional floors were put up and the hostel now houses approximately 200 students.

1971:

St. Joseph’s College of Education for Women celebrated its Silver Jubilee – Departmental exhibitions were organized and kept open for the public for over a week.  Cultural activities were conducted in the evenings on all these days. The Alumni Association was also formed and has been meeting occasionally ever since.

1972:

The management and staff collaborated with the Andhra Lutheran College of Education, Guntur in its new venture, M. Ed., course.

1974:

The Holy Rosary Convent came into being to accommodate the Sister staff responsible for the efficient supervision and administration of the college and hostel.

1976:

The affiliation of the college was transferred to the NagarjunaUniversity from the AndhraUniversity. A well deserved monument of appreciation to Rev. Sr. Stanislaus, the founder Principal of our college Sr. Stanislaus Memorial Hall - an auditorium was constructed on the hostel building in 1976.A gold medal was also installed in her honour to be given to the student who secures the highest marks in the University examination.

1986:

To meet the growing demands for space the college was shifted from St. Joseph’s School  Campus to the newly constructed building in the Hostel Campus. The then Governor Ms. Kumud Ben Joshi inaugurated the building and the Bishop of Guntur Rt. Rev. Dr. Gali Bali blessed it.

1988:

M.Ed. course was started with 30 students on roll on 8th October 1988.

1996:

Golden Jubilee - A Land mark in the history of the college. The foundation was laid for the Golden Jubilee Block. The Alumni Association arranged for a meeting, a working committee was constituted, and it was decided that the annual Alumni association meet would be held on the 2nd Saturday of July.

2000:

The Golden Jubilee Block housing the Physical Science Lab, the Computer Lab, Physical Education and Work experience rooms and a very spacious indoor games hall was inaugurated by Sr. Cletus, Superior General, Society of JMJ, Netherlands, Sr. Anacleta, General Councilor, and Sr. Stella Maris, Provincial Superior, Guntur Province.

2004:

The  college was accredited with B++ by the NAAC.

2005:

The college was granted an Autonomous status for a period of 5 years starting from the academic year 2005 – 2006

2006:

The institution celebrated the Diamond Jubilee on 26th August 2006. The day was a landmark in the history of St. Joseph’s College of Education for Women adding one more feather to the colorful cap of St. Joseph’s. On this auspicious occasion, the Diamond Jubilee magazine was released and permission for the recognition of ‘The Journal of Educational Endeavors’ was applied for.

2007:

The D.Ed Course was started with an intake capacity of 50 students and got recognition from NCTE Bangalore on 5.8.2005

2008:

A full pledged very well equipped English language laboratory  and computer lab was established

2012:

Renewal of Autonomous Status for 6 years (2011-2012 to 2016-2017)
Inauguration of the New Block for Health Centre Sponsored by UGC- Extension of Women’s Hostel (Study Hall), Sponsored by UGC, Opened by Rev. Sr. Regina Chinnappan, the Provincial Superior, Guntur Province.
ISSN Number (ISSN 2319-3018) was assigned to College Journal : Journal of Educational Endeavours.
Second Cycle of NAAC Reaccreditation with ‘A’ Grade.

2013:

Study Center for Sri Padmavathi Mahila University for M.Ed.

2017:

Permanent Affiliation to M.Ed. course from the year 2015-2016.
Best Library Award from Acharya Ngarjuna University.
Permanent Affiliation to the Attached Hostel.

2022:

Semi Sesquicentennial (75 years) Celebrations of the College (1946-2021).
Bi-Centenary Celebrations of the Congregation of JMJ.

2023:

The Process began for NAAC Accreditation – 3rd Cycle

2024:

Automation of Library – NIRMALAS (Network Information Resources Management of Academic Library System)
